Raising / Increasing the Quicktime volume higher than the maximum level

Though the Macbook speakers are adequate for most activities, they are unable to produce sound loud enough to be heard over running water, people talking, or public transportation (what, you’ve never used your laptop to watch a movie while you were shaving, in class, or riding the train?).

However, a hidden feature in Quicktime allows you to raise the volume higher than the ‘maximum’ level allowed by Leopard. Though the quality of the sound does suffer, it still maintains clarity. This should help you compete with the noises around you while watching a movie (or while listening to music, as you may find it convenient to open mp3’s in Quicktime, since iTunes doesn’t have this ‘hidden’ feature).

How to raise the volume in Quicktime higher than the maximum value
  • Step 1 : Open your video in Quicktime
  • Step 2 : Raise your Macbook volume to the maximum using the mouse, or using the shortcut keys on the keyboard
  • Step 3 : Hold down the ’shift’ key and press the ‘up’ arrow to raise the sound above the maximum level. The more you push it, the higher it goes, until it reaches a limit.
  • In order to reduce the sound back to normal, simply hit the ‘up’ or ‘down’ arrow key, or use the shortcut keys on the keyboard
