While this format has many advantages, most viewers only allow you to print or convert one page at a time. So unless you have a few hours to manually print or convert each page, you need a quick way to do it all at once.

iChm, by Robin Lu, is a free and powerful CHM file viewer for the Mac operating system. It is the solution to this problem, and you can download it here. Just follow the steps below in order to print your entire CHM file or convert it to PDF.

1) Open your document (File >> Open)

2) Click the ‘Print’ icon or use the context menus (File >> Print)

3) To print your document, select your printer from the drop-down box and select ‘Print’

4) To convert your document to PDF, click ‘PDF’ in the bottom left corner of the print dialogue box, and select ‘Save as PDF’

And that’s it!

The MagicJack is a great device which for many people can completely negate the need to own a home phone through a traditional provider, saving a fair amount of money.

Often, users of the MagicJack experience a problem where the MagicJack is recognized by your pc, but for some reason it is not working. For example, the ‘dial’ screen is not popping up. If your MagicJack is not working properly, one solution is to uninstall the drivers, and then reinstalling them. This video goes over the process involved in doing so.

iMovie Mono to Stereo Sound from Joe on Vimeo.

Mono audio tracks are perfectly fine for podcasts, but leave much to be desired for other media. iMovie 2009 does not provide a method for converting mono audio tracks (likely recorded with a computer microphone) to stereo.

This video covers how to solve this problem, using features built in to iMovie as well as the free, open-sourced audio editor ‘Audacity’ (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/).

In order to receive spam, spam distributors need to have access to your e-mail address (obvious enough). The question then becomes, how did that guy selling ‘$UP3R CHEEP V1aGRA pillz’ get your e-mail address?

Many websites (not this one!) require you to create an account prior to posting comments, download files, or access a members area. Unfortunately some of these websites sell their database of emails to spammers, meaning the reason you’re getting that viagara spam ten times a day is that someone sold your information to make a few bucks.

Spammers have additional tricks to get your e-mail as well. Bots routinely crawl websites to grab e-mails. Anytime you post a comment on a website that logs your e-mail, or if you write your e-mail in a form, or if you have your e-mail listed on a contact page, you are at risk having your e-mail being added to a spammers list.

Gmail has some great tricks though which can be used to identify WHERE the spam is coming from. Furthermore, you can easily create rules to trash the spam, and keep your inbox clean.

Method 1

Gmail allows you to add a “+” sign to your e-mail, followed by any string of text you’d like. This allows you to create unique e-mails each time you need to give out your e-mail. So if you are at website called ‘WeSellYourEmail.com’, and they force you to enter your e-mail before downloading a product they make, you would put ‘youremail+wesellyouremail@gmail.com’. Any future spam to this address can be easily recognized, and rules can easily be created to send all incoming emails to this address directly to the trash.

Some websites won’t allows you to add the “+” combo, recognizing it as an illegal e-mail address, in which case you can use the following method.

Method 2

Gmail doesn’t ‘recognize’ dots in usernames. This means that ‘youremail@gmail.com’ is the same as ‘your.email@gmail.com’ and is the same as ‘y.o.u.r.e.m.a.i.l@gmail.com’. Again, this allows you to create unique email addresses whenever you need to distribute your email.

For example if your ‘true’ email (i.e. the one you use to login on gmail.com) is ‘your.email@gmail.com’, you might dedicate the use of ‘yo.uremail@gmail.com’ to websites you sign up for, and ‘yourem.ail@gmail.com’ for contact forms. This will allow you to setup quick rules to mark and delete any spam which will be directed at those email addresses.

Gmail has a very good spam filter to begin with, but along with this method you should be able to eliminate spam entirely. Furthermore, you will be able to identify precisely where the spam came from.

While they definitely look cool, and have the ‘wow’ factor that will impress your friends, they ultimately lack usefulness. Fact is, most widgets can be replaced by Google (currency converter, language converter, search, stocks), and others are accomplished much better with free programs (i.e. RSS feeds, why use a widget? Use BLANK). Furthermore, some of these widgets that perform redundant tasks want you to pay for them.

LaTeX is a document markup language and document preparation system for the TeX typesetting program. In English, LaTeX is like Microsoft Word on steroids. Though it has been used for many years by professionals, it has yet to make it’s transition to the casual user. This is truly unfortunate, since there are many functions offered by LaTeX that aren’t available elsewhere. Read the wiki for more background information!

The advantages of LaTeX include quick formatting, better print resolution, easy creation of PDF files, free downloadable templates for almost any project, and consistency. This is quite evident when creating a resume in LaTeX. The final result is a crisp, attractive, and professional looking document.

Basic install on your Mac computer is outlined below. This will work on iBooks, Macbooks, iMacs, and Mac Minis.

Basic install of LaTeX for Mac computers

Step 1 : You need to download a LaTeX ‘Distribution’ file. This file contains the list of available commands you can use in LaTeX. If you are a power user, you may require the entire distribution (around 1 gig, a 30 minute download). However for most users, the most basic package will suffice (around 54 megs, a 2 minute download). The distribution files can be found here, while the direct link to the basic package can be found by clicking here.

Step 2 : Install the package by double clicking it, and following the wizard. At this stage, it may take an awkwardly long time to install. This is normal.

Step 3 : Download the GUI (Graphical User Interface) to make it easier to work with LaTeK. TeXShop is a convenient GUI, and can be found here, or by following the direct link here (33 meg file) (note : if you downloaded the full distribution in step 1, it included TeXShop)

Extract TeXShop, and move the application to your ‘Applications’ folder. To begin using LaTeX, simply double click this file. LaTeX has been successfully installed!

To begin using LaTeX, you will probably need to grab a template file (.tex), and simply edit and adjust it so that it works for you.

From the GUI, clicking the ‘typeset’ button quickly produces a PDF of the document you are working on. Be adventurous and play around, there is plenty to learn.
